I have really dry lips, ladies. And I’ve tried all sorts of things to fix the problem. That’s why I’m almost sad that I only recently discovered homemade lip scrubs. They are so easy to make, fun to experiment with, completely flexible, natural and healthy, and incredibly affordable in comparison with brand name scrubs. It’s not too big of a leap to say you can probably make them right now with what’s in your kitchen already.

And these DIY scrubs are saving my lips!

I just use one of my scrubs about once daily, and moisturize well afterward. Then I do my best to drink lots of water throughout the day. (Sometimes that water is filtered through coffee grounds, but still.) Those three things have made such a huge difference.

You can do it too! I’m sharing two quick little ideas for making your own lip scrubs at home. They aren’t true recipes because you don’t need one. I figure everyone’s container size will be different, and everyone’s ingredient choices will be different, so bear with me.

These two ideas are absolutely HEAVENLY in their scent and flavor (because a little is bound to get past the outside of your lips), and both have been incredibly effective for me in getting rid of the dry skin and leaving behind plump and moisturized lips.

Orange Almond Cake Lip Scrub

To Make

2 parts sugar

You can use brown sugar or white. Brown is softer, but for lips I really prefer white. Pick one and experiment with it–you could even get crazy and do a combo.

1 part almond oil

Grab some high-quality almond oil and see how much you like in your scrub.ย Start with half the amount of your sugar, and add more if your scrub is too harsh.

A few drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Orange is such a cheerful scent, and it’s skin-friendly! I use Young Living if you’re curious.

A few drops almond flavoring

We had this in our kitchen already, and it’s wonderful!

Mix your ingredients up.

For small containers like these, I use a toothpick.

Pumpkin Spice Latte Lip Scrub

To Make

2 parts sugar

You can use brown sugar or white. Brown is softer, but for lips I really prefer white. Pick one and experiment with it–you could even get crazy and do a combo.

1 part emollient oil

I love coconut oil for lip scrubs, but you can’t go wrong with jojoba, apricot kernel, or almond oil. If you’re making both scrubs, just use the same oil! ๐Ÿ™‚ Start with half the amount of your sugar, and add more if your scrub is too harsh.

1/2 part ground coffee

Coffee wakes up the skin like it does for you when you drink it. It’ll increase circulation and it’s a natural exfoliant.

1/4 part pumpkin pie spice

This is where the scrub starts getting deliciously seasonal. Grab your pumpkin pie spice and enjoy the PSL high! ๐Ÿ™‚

Mix your ingredients up.

For small containers like these, I use a toothpick.

Containers

Use glass for your homemade creations when you can. Glass is preferred for storing both body oils and essential oils. It doesn’t leach, isn’t affected by potent ingredients, is easy to clean and reuse, and it’s pretty too. These are a great size and come with labels and spatulas too. Make several and give some away to your friends!

Instructions/Tips

  • Gently rub in small circular motions across your top and bottom lips.
  • Wipe off with a washcloth or tissue.
  • Use a wonderful lip balm right after.
  • Use up to once daily. Remember to drink lots of water to keep lips hydrated!
  • If your scrub is feeling dry, flip it over for next time. The oil will permeate your scrub and you’ll love it once again! (I had to do this for my brand name scrubs too.)

I could probably come up with LOTS of different varieties of lip scrubs to make, but I’ll stop there because these seem especially nice for the fall season. I hope you enjoy mixing and scrubbing!
